Our Services

General Services

  • ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture has been utilized as a medical treatment for over 2000 years. Once thought of as alternative medicine, it is finding its way back into the medical mainstream. The World Health Organization has identified more than 40 conditions that may be helped by acupuncture. Dr. Turkell is a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist, and just recently returned from studying in China.

  • BATHING

Treat your pet to a luxurious bath. Our special, cleansing baths remove dirt, debris and that doggie pet odor – your pet will feel fresh and revitalized. If scratching is a problem, our medicated baths contain soothing agents that stop the itching. Services also include nail trim and ear cleaning.

  • BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE

Illness doesn't always have a physical cause. We help determine the cause of such disorders as separation anxiety and obsessive behavior, and then develop a treatment regimen for the client. We also have relationships with nationally renowned trainers and animal behaviorists.

  • BIRDS, REPTILES, RABBITS AND SMALL MAMMALS

Veterinary medicine for exotic pets is growing as the popularity of these animals increase. With better public education in health, nutritional and environmental management, all species have a greater chance for living longer and healthier lives. Dr Turkell worked for 2 years at the Manila Zoo in the Phillipines and continues to care for our exotic patients.

  • BLOOD TRANSFUSION

We maintain a supply of blood for all types of pets in case of emergency. The blood is collected from donor pets that live with their owners, and all blood is carefully screened for disease.

  • BOARDING

Pets are like our children – we feed, nurture and lavish attention on them. Our highly qualified kennel attendants do the same when you can't be there. We provide tender loving care (such as brushing and cuddling), and supervised outdoor playtime to keep them happy and active.

  • COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE

Our clinic embraces the holistic approach to pet health and wellness. While we practice traditional medicine with an emphasis on disease prevention, cutting edge diagnostics and clinically proven medicines and surgical techniques, we are open to complementary forms of therapy including nutritional counselling, supplements, acupuncture and other disciplines. Through continuing education, we are constantly exploring new ways to help our patients.

  • DAY CARE

Is your pet unhappy or lonely while you're at work? Give your companion the personal attention he or she deserves throughout the day. We offer the same TLC and playtime offered to our longer-term guests.

  • DENTAL CARE

Regular professional cleaning is important to maintaining your pet's teeth. We use modern and safe ultrasound to clean each tooth thoroughly - above and below the gum line. Dental technicians polish teeth to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface more resistant to plaque buildup. Fluoride treatments help strengthen enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity. Advanced dental care is available, including root canals, caps and braces at a local veterinary dental specialist.

  • EMERGENCY AND CRITICAL CARE

In any emergency, seconds count. Our experienced staff is backed up by our mobile resuscitation unit, stocked and equipped to administer the ABCs of basic life support – Airway, Breathing, Circulation/Cardiac compressions. Emergency care is offered during regular business hours. After hours, we continue to be available via our answering service. Many times, the doctor on call can help with advice over the phone, sometimes he or she may meet you at Island Animal Hospital for emergency care, or you may be directed to one of the local emergency clinics for specialized care. In any case, your pet will receive the appropriate care in the most timely manner.

  • FULLY STOCKED PHARMACY

We stock a wide range of the best veterinary drugs in the animal healthcare field.

  • ENDOSCOPY

High-tech fiber optics permits direct visual examination and biopsies of your pet’s gastrointestinal system. This allows for more accurate diagnosis and treatment of oral, esophageal, stomach, colon and even upper intestinal tract disease. Foreign objects can also be removed without the need for surgery.

  • HOSPICE/EUTHANASIA SERVICES

Saying goodbye to a long-time friend is painful. We view the last days of an animal's life as some the most important. We work with owners to provide dignity and comfort to these pets. When the time comes that the quality of life is suffering, we help and counsel in the decision-making progress. Euthanasia is carried out in an unhurried fashion, in a separate comfortable room. We also recognize that our job does not end there. From making final arrangements to lending a sympathetic ear (or shoulder), we help in any way we can to ease the burden.

  • Hospitality and the Personal Touch

This often overlooked aspect of medicine is sadly vanishing from the human health field. Part of our mission statement includes building relationships in the tradition of the trusted family doctor. We take this very seriously. Whether it's a medical crisis, a behavioral question or just stopping by to chat, we are with you through it all.

  • ULTRASOUND

  • LASERS

Lasers are a minimally invasive alternative to traditional surgery. Lasers replace scalpels in many procedures, and are useful for a wide range of conditions, such as cyst, tumor, and wart removal, and have become the standard of care in declawing. Laser procedures result in less pain; less bleeding and less swelling. They reduce risk of infection and result in less post-operative discomfort.
